Agent Thomas R. Alber, known as the “US Crypto Cop,” is a highly experienced law enforcement officer and military veteran with over 35 years of service. He currently serves as an Enforcement Agent with the Kansas Racing and Gaming Commission, where he is a leading investigator and instructor in crypto-related crimes. Through his USCryptoCop initiative, Alber equips law enforcement officers with the tools they need to effectively combat scams, fraud, human trafficking, money laundering, and cryptocurrency-related crimes.
Alber offers the “Cryptocurrency for the Patrol Officer” course, a free, in-person training designed to help officers gather crucial perishable information in scam investigations. The course teaches officers how to capture evidence, such as cryptocurrency transaction details, before it is lost, empowering them to better address scams and protect victims.
In law enforcement, Alber started at a rural Kansas Sheriff’s Office in 1989 and eventually became a chief of police in Missouri where he served for 18 years. He has been President of the FBI-Law Enforcement Executive Development Association (FBI-LEEDA) and worked globally to train law enforcement executives. Notably, he played a key role in the FBI-LEEDA Youth Leadership Program, helping youth attend the FBI National Academy in Quantico, VA.
Beyond training, Alber regularly writes and publishes articles on scams that target various generations, including Gen X, Gen Y, and the elderly. His work addresses schemes like social media account hijacking, identity theft, P2P payment fraud, card-cracking scams, and other types of digital fraud. Alber emphasizes the importance of collaboration between law enforcement and financial institutions, believing it is essential in dismantling international scam operations often orchestrated by large crime syndicates.
In addition to his expertise in fighting cryptocurrency crimes, Alber has a rich background in leadership training through his work with FBI-LEEDA. He served as President of FBI-LEEDA, where he helped develop leadership skills for law enforcement executives around the world. He also played a pivotal role as chairman of the FBI-LEEDA Youth Leadership Program (YLP) at the FBI National Academy in Quantico, Virginia, ensuring that sponsored youth had the opportunity to attend the program and hone their leadership abilities.
Alber’s career began in the United States Marine Corps before transitioning to the US Army, where he served in various roles, including communications, military police, military intelligence, and psychological operations. He rose to the rank of officer through a direct commission. His service includes deployments during the First Gulf War and the Global War on Terrorism, and he also served as Deputy Detention Facility Commander at Guantanamo Bay, Cuba. Notably, he rescued 36 individuals, including FBI National Academy graduates and their families, during the collapse of Hamid Karzai International Airport in Afghanistan.
Alber is also an advocate for victims of scams and for individuals unjustly detained by foreign governments. He actively speaks out in support of people like Tigran Gambaryan, who is currently being held in Nigeria, and other individuals unjustly detained globally.
